AI agents that check every invoice and form are now cheap enough to run

Anthropic

What’s new

Haiku 5.5 is a fast, low-cost model for high-volume work such as reading, sorting and pulling details out of documents. It reads images as well as text, handles very long inputs (up to 1 million tokens) and can operate a computer and web browser. It is meant to run alongside Anthropic’s larger models, doing the narrow, repetitive steps of a bigger job.

Two things changed. Price: for requests under 100,000 tokens, Anthropic charges US$0.10 per million input tokens and US$0.50 per million output tokens, against US$1 and US$5 for Haiku 4.5, the previous small model. That is 90% less for those requests and 50% less for longer ones (Anthropic puts the average saving at about 75%), although the new model uses slightly more tokens per task. Ability: on Anthropic’s own computer-use test (OSWorld 2.1, offline subset), Haiku 5.5 scored 72.4% against 15.7% for Haiku 4.5. Those are the vendor’s figures, not an independent test.

For L&V, this means an agent can afford to check every document that comes in, not just the ones a person picks out, and can do simple data entry in web systems that have no integration. A larger model still handles the harder judgement calls, and a person still approves the results.

Who can use it

  • Generally available now through Anthropic’s API, and through Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Computer-use support in Anthropic’s Python and TypeScript SDKs is in beta.
  • US$0.10 per million input tokens and US$0.50 per million output tokens for requests under 100,000 tokens; US$0.50 and US$2.50 above that. The Batch API halves these prices for work that can wait. No AUD price is published.
  • Australia is on Anthropic’s list of supported countries for the API.
  • Anthropic’s own API routes requests globally by default; its data residency option keeps processing in the US, at 10% extra. Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud offer endpoints that keep data in a chosen region, also at 10% extra, so check whether an Australian region carries this model if the client needs data kept onshore.

How it fits your current systems

  • Works through what the business already has: a shared inbox, a folder of PDFs and photos, and the web portals of its existing job, freight or inventory systems.
  • The business doesn’t change software. Where a system has no integration, the agent can enter data through the browser after a person approves it.
  • L&V would build the agent, the rules it checks against (rate cards, price lists, scope documents), the review sheet where staff approve its work, and a cost cap.
For small businesses

Work it can take off your team’s hands

Freight operators / forwarders

Checking every carrier invoice line by line against the agreed rate card and booking details, and listing surcharges and fees that don’t match, so the team disputes overcharges instead of paying them because nobody had time to look.

Wholesale distributors

Comparing each new supplier price list against current costs and selling prices, and flagging products whose margin has dropped below target, before the new costs flow through to customer quotes.

Commercial cleaning

Reading site inspection photos and checklists from every visit against each contract’s scope of work, and listing missed areas for supervisors, so problems are fixed before the client notices.

Before you rely on it

  • The benchmark scores are Anthropic’s own. Test the agent on a sample of the business’s real documents, including poor scans, before relying on it.
  • Anthropic says its larger models remain better for complex multi-step work. Haiku 5.5 suits narrow, repeated steps, with a person or a larger model handling exceptions.
  • Browser data entry is slower and less predictable than a proper integration, and some websites block automated use. Keep a person approving each entry at first.
  • Prices are in US dollars and per token. Long documents over 100,000 tokens cost five times more per token, so set a monthly spending limit.
  • Data is processed outside Australia unless an Australian cloud region is used. Check client contracts and privacy obligations first.

Our view: A real change in the cost of running an agent: checks that used to be too expensive to do on every document now cost very little. The computer-use gain looks large but is the vendor’s figure, so we would prove it on a client’s own documents and portals, with a person approving the output, before scaling up.

Typical work AI can help with

Simple tasks

  • Reading invoices, orders and forms, and entering the data
  • Answering customer and client emails
  • Following up, reminders and scheduling

Complex tasks

  • Preparing customs entry data from invoices and packing lists, for checking
  • Tracking consignments across carrier portals and alerting customers to delays
  • Building quotes from rate sheets and surcharges for routine lanes
  • Analysing on-time, cost and volume data by lane and customer, and reporting on trends
  • Researching rates, routes and competitors, and writing market reports
